You jump into the shower and notice out of the corner of your eye a large spider on the wall above you. You freeze with fear and your heart starts to beat rapidly. What has happened?
The brain's visual cortex has sent a signal of danger to the amgydala which then instructs the adrenal gland to start pumping adrenaline and cortisol to increase heart rate and prepare you for *flight or fight*. It's a good system in times of crisis.
But what if the threat is more subtle ... office gossip, fear of failure, loss of a job? The perceived threat can keep the amgydala sending signals to the adrenal gland and you can be in a constant state of *fight or flight* ... and this is downright dangerous!
As I said last week ... do whatever it takes to square away issues that can produce chronic stress.
